Sclerotherapy – Leg Veins

So-Long, Spider Veins

Sclerotherapy is a technique used to treat surface spider veins by injecting a tiny volume of irritant into the vein, ultimately causing it to close up over time. Sclerotherapy for spider veins is a simple, painless,  and quick procedure that is performed right in our office at Aesthetix Skin and Surgery Center.  We use an FDA approved solution for Sclerotherapy, Asclera, with treatment priced by session, allowing for both legs to be treated. Dr. Chaplik is very experienced with this product and technique, having performed this treatment for over 20 years.

How is the Procedure Performed?

A tiny needle is used to inject a small volume of irritant solution directly into the vein. The solution irritates the lining of the vessel, causing it to close down. Over time, the body will absorb the treated vein and it will disappear and lighten in color. Most patients only describe mild discomfort during the procedure.

What Can I Expect After Sclerotherapy?

Directly after injection, the area may be red and irritated, which is a normal and usually subsides within the first week. Over time, the veins will respond to treatment and begin to disappear and lighten in color. Generally, normal activities can be resumed immediately following sclerotherapy.  Compression stockings must be worn after sclerotherapy for about 3-5 days to enhance vein closure and to reduce discoloration.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

Sclerotherapy is a tiered treatment approach and typically multiple treatment sessions spread out over several months are required, depending on the extent of disease. The full benefit of sclerotherapy may not be realized until 4-8 weeks after injection.  There is a set limit on the volume of irritant that can be injected in one session, requiring up 5 sessions to fully treat the legs.

How Much Does Sclerotherapy Cost?

Sclerotherapy for surface spider veins is typically considered a cosmetic procedure, and is thus typically not covered by insurance. Patients are charged per session.
